Marko's Towers (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Marko's Towers, locally known as Markovi Kuli, are a formidable medieval fortress complex perched on granite hills overlooking the city of Prilep. The site became the royal residence of Prince Marko Mrnjavčević in the 14th century, a legendary figure in Balkan epic poetry. The fortress consists of several defensive lines with walls constructed from massive stone blocks that blend seamlessly into the natural rock formations. Archaeological studies reveal that the site was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age and was later utilized by the Romans and Byzantines for strategic purposes. The ruins include guard towers, ceremonial gates, and the remnants of medieval churches and palatial structures. Today, the area is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and serves as a symbol of regional independence during the Ottoman expansion.
