Zrze Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Zrze Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is spectacularly situated on a high rock plateau at the foot of Mount Dautica in the Dolneni municipality. The origins of this spiritual site date back to the 14th century, although archaeological finds suggest that the location was used by hermits as early as late antiquity. The main church is famous for its well-preserved frescoes from various periods, including works by the renowned painter Metropolitan Jovan from 1391. The monastery complex includes residential buildings, a chapel, and numerous monk cells carved into the rocks, witnessing the region's ascetic tradition. From the monastery's terrace, visitors can enjoy an impressive view over the vast Pelagonia plain. Despite multiple destructions during Ottoman rule, the monastery was rebuilt repeatedly and remains an active center of monastic life today. Its quiet and secluded location makes it a significant destination for religious pilgrimages and cultural tourism.
