Makedonium (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Makedonium, officially known as the Ilinden Memorial, is one of the most distinctive architectural landmarks in North Macedonia, perched on a hill overlooking the town of Kruševo. It was inaugurated in 1974 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Macedonian republic and the 71st anniversary of the Ilinden Uprising. Designed by architects Jordan Grabuloski and Iskra Grabuloska, the structure stands out with its futuristic, organic form, resembling a giant white capsule with protruding glass windows. Inside, the memorial houses the tomb of Nikola Karev, the president of the short-lived Kruševo Republic of 1903, along with artistic stained-glass windows by Borko Lazeski. The symbolism of the monument refers to the struggle for freedom and independence of the Macedonian people. The complex also features a large plateau with sculptures and reliefs that tell the chronological story of the uprising. As a masterpiece of Yugoslav brutalism and modernist sculpture, it attracts history buffs and architecture enthusiasts from around the world.
