Pesna Cave (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Pesna Cave, located near Makedonski Brod, is renowned for having one of the largest cave entrance portals in the Balkans. The entrance is an impressive 30 meters high and 20 meters wide, giving the cave a majestic appearance. Geologically, it is a passage cave in karst rock that is traversed by an underground river after heavy rains, which flows into the Treska River in front of the entrance. Directly above the cave entrance are the ruins of the medieval fortress 'Devina Kuli,' which are connected to local legends about the folk hero Krali Marko and his sister Pesna. Archaeological excavations in the cave have revealed traces of human presence from the Neolithic and ancient periods. The acoustics inside the cave are exceptional, making it a site of special interest for researchers and visitors alike. Due to its size and shape, Pesna Cave is often compared to fictional landscapes from fantasy literature and is a protected natural monument of North Macedonia.
