Kodžadžik (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Kodžadžik is a historically significant village in the Centar Župa municipality of western North Macedonia. It gained international prominence as the ancestral home of Ali Rıza Efendi, the father of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. The village is located in a mountainous region, offering sweeping views over the Debar valley. In 2014, a memorial house and museum were constructed here in traditional Ottoman style, dedicated to Atatürk's ancestors and serving as a major destination for Turkish tourists. Historically, Kodžadžik was a strategically vital fortress in the 15th century known as 'Svetigrad,' which was the site of significant battles between the forces of Skanderbeg and the Ottomans. The ruins of the old fortress can still be found on the surrounding hills. The village population continues to preserve its distinct cultural traditions and local dialect to this day. Beyond its historical importance, the region is known for its pristine nature and traditional livestock farming. The village is accessible via winding mountain roads that pass through dense forests. Every year, high-level delegations visit the site to strengthen cultural ties between North Macedonia and Turkey.
