Monastery of the Most Pure Mother of God (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Monastery of the Most Pure Mother of God, often known simply as the Kicevo Monastery, is one of the most significant spiritual centers in western North Macedonia. It is located on Mount Cocan at a pretty altitude above the city of Kicevo and is dedicated to the Annunciation. The current church building was erected in 1848 on the foundations of an older 14th-century church that had been destroyed during Ottoman rule. The monastery is famous for its magnificent iconostasis and frescoes created by masters of the Debar school, particularly by Dicho Zograf. For centuries, it served as a center for education and the preservation of Macedonian identity and literature. Every year on September 21 (Nativity of Mary), the monastery attracts thousands of pilgrims who appreciate the sacred atmosphere and architectural beauty of the complex set amidst dense oak forests.
