Shebenik-Jabllanica National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Shebenik-Jabllanica National Park is located in eastern Albania on the border with North Macedonia and is one of the wildest and most pristine areas in the country. It was established in 2008 and covers an area of about 339 square kilometers. The park is part of the European Green Belt and hosts significant beech forests that have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe' since 2017. The landscape is characterized by high mountain peaks over 2,200 meters and numerous glacial lakes. In this remote habitat lives one of the last populations of the critically endangered Balkan lynx, as well as brown bears, wolves, and golden eagles. Geologically, the region is diverse, showing striking karst phenomena and deep river valleys. The flora includes rare species such as the Albanian lily. Due to its secluded location, the park gives authentic nature experiences for hikers and researchers but requires good preparation. The protection of untouched forest ecosystems is a top priority for the park management.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access is typically gained via the town of Librazhd in eastern Albania, following scenic but often unpaved mountain roads towards the border with North Macedonia. A robust vehicle with good ground clearance is strongly recommended for the upper sections.
📅
Best season
Late spring through early autumn is the good period to explore the vast beech forests and access the striking glacial lakes. Winter brings deep snow, closing many higher roads and transforming the park into a remote, inaccessible sanctuary.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The national park features a diverse alpine topography with ancient, dense beech forests giving way to elevated pastures and pristine glacial lakes. Hiking paths can be steep, rocky, and are often unmarked, requiring good physical endurance.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy trekking boots, reliable GPS navigation, and fully waterproof clothing are crucial when venturing into this remote sanctuary. Since facilities are virtually non-existent, visitors must carry all necessary provisions, including ample food and water.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors usually park at designated clearings near the park administration buildings or safely off to the side at the end of drivable dirt tracks. Always ensure your vehicle does not block the narrow paths used by local shepherds or rangers.
⚠️
Safety
This sanctuary is home to large carnivores such as bears and wolves, so hikers should make moderate noise while walking and stick to daylight hours. Weather can change unpredictably in the mountains, bringing sudden fog that obscures unmarked trails.
⏱️
Time needed
Reaching the glacial lakes and thoroughly enjoying the expansive beech forests generally demands a long, challenging full-day hike of roughly six to ten hours. Shorter explorations near the park entrances can be managed in a half-day format.
