Okryu Valley (North Korea)

Weather…

Okryu Valley is an integral part of the famous Kumgang Mountains (Diamond Mountains) in Kangwon Province and is regarded as one of the most pretty valleys in the region. It is renowned for the Okryu Falls, whose name translates to 'Jade Stream' or 'Pearl Stream,' referring to the clear, sparkling water that cascades over smooth granite rocks. Geologically, the valley is characterized by massive granite formations created about 100 million years ago during the Mesozoic era, shaped into their current bizarre forms by millions of years of erosion. Along the valley, there are numerous emerald-green rock pools carved into the hard stone by the force of the falling water. The vegetation is lush, featuring rare pine trees that seem to grow directly out of rock crevices. Historically and culturally, the valley is a symbol of natural harmony in Korean art and literature. It is accessible via well-maintained hiking trails that allow visitors to experience the complex ecological structures and geological diversity of the Diamond Mountains up close.
