Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve (Nepal)

Weather…

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is the only hunting reserve in Nepal, covering an expansive area of 1,325 square kilometers across the Rukum, Myagdi, and Baglung districts. Established in 1987, the reserve was created to manage controlled hunting activities while promoting wildlife conservation through sustainable practices. It is globally recognized for its population of Blue Sheep (Naur), which is the primary target for licensed international trophy hunters. The reserve's landscape features a mix of alpine meadows, high-altitude marshes, and dense forests of fir, pine, and rhododendron, all set against the backdrop of the Dhaulagiri massif. Beyond the Blue Sheep, the area provides habitat for elusive species such as the snow leopard, musk deer, and various pheasants, including the Himalayan Monal. For trekkers, Dhorpatan gives off-the-beaten-path trails and a chance to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Kham Magar people. Hunting is strictly regulated via an annual quota system to ensure the long-term health of the mountain fauna.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The most favorable months to observe the blue sheep and Himalayan tahr are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, the weather is generally clear, offering excellent visibility across the rugged alpine terrain.
🌅
Best time of day
Wildlife viewing is typically most rewarding during the early morning hours just after sunrise or in the late afternoon before dusk. The animals are usually more active and grazing during these cooler parts of the day, making them easier to spot on the slopes.
📜
Etiquette
Since this is a strictly regulated and monitored reserve, visitors must stay on designated paths and follow all instructions from local guides. Keep a respectful distance from the wildlife at all times, do not make loud noises, and absolutely never feed any animals.
🎒
What to bring
Given the challenging high-altitude environment, sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support are absolutely essential. Bring a high-quality pair of binoculars or a spotting scope to safely observe the well-camouflaged mountain ungulates from a distance.
🧭
Getting there
Reaching the reserve requires a strenuous multi-day trek from the nearest roadheads or a chartered flight to the local airstrip, followed by hiking. It is highly recommended to arrange your visit through a registered trekking agency and travel with an experienced local guide.
🦌
What to expect
Spotting the blue sheep and tahr requires scanning the steep, rocky ridges very slowly and methodically. These animals blend in perfectly with their environment, so take frequent breaks to observe the landscape, and allow yourself plenty of time to acclimatize to the altitude.
