Bhairahawa Special Economic Zone (Nepal)

Weather…

The Bhairahawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), inaugurated in 2014, is the first of its kind in Nepal. It was established with the primary objective of promoting exports and attracting foreign direct investment. Located near the Sunauli border crossing with India and the Gautam Buddha International Airport, its location is strategic. The SEZ gives a range of incentives for companies that set up within it, including tax holidays, customs duty exemptions on raw materials, and simplified administration. The government mandates that industries within the SEZ must export at least 60% of their products. Although the initial occupancy of plots by industries was slower than anticipated, the Bhairahawa SEZ is considered a vital pilot project. The lessons learned from it are crucial for the development of other SEZs across the country, which are a major component of Nepal's strategy to improve its trade balance and industrialize.
