Bandipur
Bandipur is a beautifully preserved Newari settlement perched on a high ridge, offering a journey back in time to old Nepal. Its main street is blissfully free of vehicles, highlighting the peaceful atmosphere of brick buildings with intricately carved wooden windows. Once a major trade post on the route to Tibet, it is now a sanctuary for travelers seeking tranquility and authentic architecture. The surrounding area features great hiking trails, such as the one leading to Siddha Gufa, one of South Asia's largest caves. From the Tundikhel field, you can enjoy a sprawling panorama of the central Himalayas. The local dining scene is famous for authentic Newari sets like Samay Baji. Bandipur is located halfway between Kathmandu and Pokhara, reachable via a short drive up from Dumre. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the air is clear and the mountain views are at their most sweeping.
