Kathmandu Durbar Square (Nepal)

Weather…

Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Hanuman Dhoka, is the historic heart of the Nepalese capital and served as the royal seat for the Malla and Shah dynasties. The square has an extraordinary collection of palaces, courtyards, and temples constructed primarily between the 12th and 18th centuries. A major highlight is the Taleju Bhavani Temple, built in 1564, which dominates the skyline with its three-tiered roof and opens to the public only once a year. Another significant structure is the Kumari Ghar, the palace of the Living Goddess, where a young girl worshipped as the reincarnation of Goddess Taleju resides. Despite suffering extensive damage during the 2015 earthquake, the square remains a symbol of Nepalese identity and a testament to Newari architectural brilliance. The intricate wood carvings on the palace windows and doors depict various scenes from Hindu epics. Today, the square continues to host vital state ceremonies and animated religious festivals like Indra Jatra.
