Saadian Tombs (Morocco)

Weather…

The Saadian Tombs in Marrakech are a royal necropolis dating back to the Saadian dynasty in the 16th century. The tombs were lavishly developed under Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur to house the remains of the royal family and prominent officials. The complex consists of two main mausoleums and an extensive garden area. The most famous structure is the Hall of the Twelve Columns, where the Sultan himself is buried, featuring the finest Carrara marble and intricate stucco work. Following the fall of the Saadian dynasty, the Alaouite Sultan Moulay Ismail had the tombs walled up to obscure the memory of his predecessors, which ironically led to their near-well-suited preservation. The tombs were only rediscovered in 1917 through French aerial photography and subsequently restored. Today, they are among the most visited historical sites in Marrakech, showcasing the artistic peak of the 16th-century Saadian era.
