Ben Youssef Madrasa (Morocco)

Weather…

The Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakesh is an architectural masterpiece and was once the largest Islamic college in all of North Africa. Originally founded in the 14th century by the Marinids, it was completely rebuilt in the 16th century under the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib. The college could accommodate up to 800 students, who lived in 132 small cells surrounding the central courtyard while studying Quranic sciences. Its architecture is characterized by an incredible abundance of ornamentation, with carved cedar wood, fine marble, and artistic stucco work covering nearly every surface. The central prayer hall is particularly impressive, featuring a grand dome and elaborate calligraphic inscriptions on the walls. The building served not only as an educational center but also as a symbol of the city's cultural and religious golden age. Following an extensive restoration in recent years, the madrasa has been returned to its original glory, offering visitors a profound look into Islamic architecture and scholarship. It is regarded as one of the most significant monuments of the Saadian era in Morocco.
