Safi Power Plant (Morocco)

Weather…

The Safi Power Plant (Safi Energy Hub) is a technological flagship of Morocco's energy infrastructure and one of the most efficient coal-fired power plants in Africa. The facility has an installed capacity of 1,386 megawatts, consisting of two units of 693 megawatts each. It is the first power plant in Africa to use ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, which allows for higher energy efficiency with significantly lower CO2 emissions and reduced fuel consumption. Commissioned in December 2018, the plant covers approximately 25% of Morocco's total electricity demand. The project was realized with an investment volume of around 2.6 billion USD by the Safiec consortium. Strategically located on the Atlantic coast south of Safi, the power plant features its own coal terminal in the new port of Safi. The facility plays a crucial role in ensuring national energy security and supporting industrial growth through a stable base load supply. Despite Morocco's strong focus on renewable energy, Safi remains an essential component of the country's energy mix due to its high efficiency.
