The Bahia Palace in Marrakech is an outstanding example of late 19th-century Moroccan palace architecture. Its name translates to 'the brilliant' or 'the beautiful'. Construction began in the 1860s under Si Moussa, Grand Vizier of Sultan Moulay Hassan, and was later extensively expanded by his son, Ba Ahmed. The palace spans approximately two hectares and consists of a vast array of rooms, courtyards, and gardens that grew organically without a central master plan. Particularly impressive are the carved cedar wood ceilings, intricate stucco work, and colorful zellige mosaics. The Grand Honor Courtyard, with its marble floor, is one of the complex's most famous features. During the French Protectorate era, the palace served as the residence for the Resident-General. Today, it is open to the public, offering a deep insight into the luxurious lifestyle of the Moroccan nobility during that era.
