Tensift Valley (Morocco)

Weather…

The Oued Tensift Valley stretches for about 270 kilometers through central Morocco, connecting the foothills of the High Atlas with the Atlantic Ocean. The river flows north of the imperial city of Marrakech and irrigates the extensive Haouz plain, which is vital for the cultivation of cereals and fruit trees. Historically, the Tensift was a strategic barrier and a major resource for the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties, who built impressive bridges in the 12th century, such as the Pont de Tensift. The valley is characterized by seasonal fluctuations in water levels; the river can nearly dry up in summer, while it swells significantly after winter rains in the Atlas. Geologically, the valley basin consists of sedimentary rocks deposited by the erosion of the Atlas Mountains. Today, the valley is a critical ecological area, though threatened by the expansion of Marrakech's suburbs and the overexploitation of water resources.
