Larache is an easy on the eye port city on the Moroccan Atlantic coast, situated at the mouth of the Loukkos River. The city's history dates back to antiquity, evidenced by the nearby ruins of Lixus, a Phoenician and later Roman settlement renowned for its fish processing. The present city was founded in the 7th century by Berbers and fortified in the 15th century by the Marinids to repel pirate attacks. Larache was under Spanish influence for extended periods, notably from 1610 to 1689 and again during the protectorate from 1911 to 1956, which shaped the architecture of the central Plaza de España and the Al-Anwar district. Today, Larache is a major center for the fishing and canning industries. The city is also a significant producer of fruits and vegetables, particularly strawberries exported worldwide. With its wide avenues and white facades, Larache maintains a relaxed atmosphere between Moroccan tradition and Spanish heritage.
