Tangier is a storied port city located at the northernmost tip of Morocco, serving as the historic gateway between Africa and Europe at the Strait of Gibraltar. Its strategic position has made it a coveted territory for millennia, ruled by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Europeans. A defining period in its history was from 1923 to 1956, when Tangier was an 'International Zone,' a semi-independent territory that attracted spies, artists, and literary figures such as William S. Burroughs. The city's unique charm lies in its blend of the traditional whitewashed Medina, the hilltop Kasbah, and the elegant, European-influenced Ville Nouvelle. Just outside the city lie the Caves of Hercules, a natural cavern system whose sea-facing entrance remarkably resembles the map of Africa. In recent decades, Tangier has undergone a massive economic transformation with the development of Tanger Med, now one of the largest container ports in the Mediterranean and Africa. This industrial boom has modernized the city while its cultural heart remains centered on the Grand Socco and Petit Socco squares. With Spain just 14 kilometers across the water, Tangier continues to be a bustling melting pot of cultures, languages, and maritime history.
