Lixus Ruins (Morocco)

Weather…

Lixus is an ancient archaeological site located near Larache on Morocco's Atlantic coast. It was founded as early as the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, making it one of the oldest settlements in the country. It later became a significant Carthaginian and eventually a Roman city in the province of Mauretania Tingitana. The city was famous in antiquity for its fish-processing industry, particularly the production of garum, a fermented fish sauce, with over 150 factory basins preserved on-site. In mythology, Lixus is often associated with the site of the Garden of the Hesperides. Visible remains today include an acropolis with temples, a theater, thermal baths, and massive city walls. Its strategic position on a hill overlooking the Loukkos River provided both defense and maritime access. Lixus has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 1995 and is a vital testament to North Africa's pre-Islamic history.
