Ksar el-Kebir is a city steeped in history located in northwestern Morocco, situated on the banks of the Loukkos River. Its name means 'The Great Castle,' referring to the significant fortifications reinforced in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty. The city gained worldwide historical fame through the 'Battle of the Three Kings' in 1578, where the Moroccan army achieved a decisive victory over Portuguese invaders, sealing the fate of the Portuguese monarchy. For centuries, the city has been a religious center, housing numerous mosques and mausoleums of prominent Sufi scholars. During the Spanish protectorate, Ksar el-Kebir served as an important garrison town. Today, it is an animated agricultural hub, particularly known for growing rice, cotton, and sugarcane in the fertile Loukkos plain. The city's traditional markets (souks) continue to attract traders from across the entire region.
