Martil is an animated coastal city on the Mediterranean Sea, located about ten kilometers northeast of Tetouan. Originally established as a military and commercial port at the mouth of the Martil River, it has evolved into one of the most popular summer destinations for Moroccan vacationers. During the Spanish Protectorate, the city was known as Río Martín, a name that still influences its urban layout and colonial architecture. Martil is also a significant educational hub, hosting the main campus of Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, which provides the city with a youthful energy throughout the year. The long beachfront promenade serves as the heart of social life, lined with cafes, restaurants, and holiday resorts. Despite rapid tourism development, Martil maintains a strong connection to its maritime history and the traditions of the northern Mediterranean coast.
