Chefchaouen, Morocco's celebrated "Blue City," is positioned on the slopes of the Rif Mountains beneath the twin peaks of Tisouka and Moussa. It was founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami as a fortress to counter Portuguese incursions along the coast. Following the Reconquista in Spain, waves of Muslim and Jewish refugees settled here, bestowing the town with its distinctive Andalusian architectural style and the tradition of blue-washed houses. While the blue tint was originally intended to repel heat and insects, it has since become a world-renowned visual signature. The medina is a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleys where local artisans display unique crafts such as wool garments and hand-woven blankets. Geographically, the town is famous for the Ras El Maa spring, which supplies fresh water and serves as a gathering point for local residents. Since 2010, the city has been recognized as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage for its exemplary Mediterranean diet. Its serene ambiance and nearby hiking trails make Chefchaouen a highlight of northern Morocco.
