Chola Hills (Zambia)

Weather…

The Chola Hills are located in Zambia's Northern Province, north of the town of Luwingu, and form a prominent elevation in the otherwise flat plateau. This range of hills consists of ancient volcanic and metamorphic rocks reaching altitudes of approximately 1,500 metres. They function as a significant local watershed between the Luapula and Chambeshi river basins. The topography is characterized by rounded peaks and narrow valleys covered by dense Miombo woodlands. The valleys often contain wetlands locally known as "dambos," which support specialized flora and fauna. The region is sparsely populated, which has contributed to the preservation of the natural wilderness, providing habitat for various antelopes and predators. Geographically, the Chola Hills are an important link in the chain of elevations that structure the northern Zambian plateau and influence the local microclimate.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Traveling to these hills in northeastern Zambia is often a true overland expedition across poorly maintained, incredibly dusty dirt roads. You need a lot of patience, an extremely capable off-road vehicle, and precise local directions, as signage is mostly absent.
📅
Best season
The cool and dry months between May and August are perfectly convenient for traversing the bushland and enjoying clear, sweeping views. Once the seasonal rains begin, the tall grass grows rapidly and blocks visibility, while the tracks become dangerous mudslides.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is strongly characterized by untouched, partially densely overgrown hilltops and deep valleys lacking any tourist infrastructure. Anyone hiking here often literally pushes through the wild African bush, typically following old animal tracks.
🎒
What to bring
Travelers must be absolutely self-sufficient here, meaning bringing complete camping gear, tools for car repairs, spare tires, and huge water supplies. Tough pants to protect against the ever-present thorns and extremely robust footwear are irreplaceable.
🅿️
Parking
In this vast wilderness, the vehicle is simply parked wherever you decide to set up camp for the night-there are no official parking lots anywhere. The car often serves as the protective center of the camp, making a well-chosen, flat spot quite important.
⚠️
Safety
Due to the incredible vastness and complete lack of cellular coverage, you should never travel through this remote area with only a single vehicle. A reliable satellite phone and comprehensive emergency medical equipment are strictly mandatory here.
⏱️
Time needed
It often takes a full two days just to penetrate deep into the hills, which is why you should allocate a minimum of one week for such an expedition. Short weekend trips make absolutely no sense in this extremely rugged and highly inaccessible region.
