Cap Spartel (Morocco)

Weather…

Cap Spartel marks the northwesternmost point of mainland Africa, situated about 12 kilometers west of Tangier on the Moroccan coast. The cape is traditionally recognized as the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, where distinct water colors can sometimes be observed at the confluence. Perched 326 meters above sea level is the iconic lighthouse, which began operations in 1864. Its construction was funded through an unprecedented international commission after several devastating shipwrecks occurred in the treacherous nearby waters. Located just below the cape are the famous Caves of Hercules, natural limestone caverns partially expanded by ancient stone-cutters, renowned for their sea-facing opening resembling the map of Africa. The surrounding landscape features lush Mediterranean scrub and pine forests, making the area a strategic site for observing bird migration through the Strait of Gibraltar. In antiquity, the promontory was named 'Ampelusia,' reflecting the region's historical abundance of vineyards.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Situated conveniently just outside Tangier, Cap Spartel is easily reachable by local taxi or rental car following the scenic coastal roads slightly west of the city. The entire route is well-paved and clearly signposted, making it a highly accessible landmark.
📅
Best season
Spring and early autumn typically offer the most pleasant, moderate weather for taking in the memorable views where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. Clear days during these mild seasons provide panoramic visibility towards the Spanish coastline.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The cape features slightly elevated rocky bluffs adorned with lush coastal vegetation and pine trees overlooking the deep blue sea. The walking paths around the famous lighthouse and viewpoints are generally well-maintained, though some coastal trails are uneven.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable, flat walking shoes are perfectly sufficient for navigating the main paved paths, but a light jacket is highly recommended as ocean breezes can be surprisingly cool. Sunglasses and a decent camera are must-haves for the impressive panoramic seascapes.
🅿️
Parking
There is a reasonably sized dedicated parking area very close to the famous Cap Spartel lighthouse, which can become quite busy during peak tourist summer seasons. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon usually guarantees a much easier experience.
⚠️
Safety
While the primary viewing areas and platforms are well secured, visitors choosing to venture onto narrower, informal trails should be careful of steep, unguarded drops towards the ocean. The coastal rocks can become very slippery, so stay on designated routes.
⏱️
Time needed
The majority of international visitors spend roughly an hour at the cape itself to enjoy the scenic views, take memorable photographs, and perhaps have a relaxing coffee. It is almost always combined with a visit to the nearby Caves of Hercules for a satisfying trip.
