Roman Mosaics of Petrovac (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Roman mosaics of Petrovac are a significant archaeological witness to antiquity on the Montenegrin coast. Dating back to the 3rd or 4th century AD, they were accidentally discovered in 1902 during excavation works. The mosaics originally belonged to a Villa Rustica, the agricultural estate of a wealthy Roman citizen. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of the god Hypnos, the god of sleep, who is shown here in a reclining position with wings on his temples. This is one of the rarest depictions of this deity in the entire Mediterranean region. The mosaics feature complex geometric patterns and floral motifs, crafted with high artisanal precision from small stones. To protect the finds, a modern roof structure has been erected, allowing visitors to view the restored floor surfaces. The site is located in the Mirište district, not far from the center of Petrovac.
