Citadel of Budva (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Citadel of Budva, officially known as the Fortress of St. Mary, is the most imposing structure within Budva's Old Town. Its origins can be traced back to the 9th century, though much of its current appearance dates from the Austrian rule in the 19th century. Strategically perched on a rocky cliff at the southernmost tip of the Old Town, it was designed to protect the settlement from naval attacks. Today, the citadel houses a significant library containing a rare collection of ancient maps, alongside a maritime museum. The thick stone walls and bastions reflect the turbulent history of the region, which was shaped by Romans, Venetians, and Austrians over the centuries. From the citadel's ramparts, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Adriatic Sea and the nearby island of Sveti Nikola. It also serves as a prime cultural venue, hosting various performances during the prestigious annual "Grad Teatar" theater festival.
