Reževići Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Reževići Monastery is situated on a photogenic stretch of the Montenegrin coast between Sveti Stefan and Petrovac, serving as one of the most vital spiritual centers of the Paštrovići region. The monastery's origins trace back to the 13th century, with local legend suggesting that Stefan Nemanja founded the first church after resting at a nearby spring. The complex features three churches: the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God (1223), the Church of St. Michael the Archangel (14th century), and the larger Holy Trinity Church built in the 18th century. For centuries, the monastery was a key meeting place for the Paštrovići tribal council, where essential political and legal decisions were reached for the local community. Despite multiple destructions by Ottoman forces and pirate raids, as well as severe damage from the 1979 earthquake, its spiritual continuity has been preserved through dedicated restorations. Notable features include precious iconostases, remnants of ancient frescoes, and the venerable olive groves surrounding the grounds. Today, Reževići is an active male monastery, attracting pilgrims and cultural travelers alike with its peaceful ambiance and commanding views over the Adriatic Sea.
