Praskvica Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Praskvica Monastery, perched above Sveti Stefan, is regarded as the spiritual heart of the Paštrovići region, deriving its name from the scent of local peaches ('praskva') that once filled the nearby spring. Traditional accounts date its founding to 1050, though its first official record appears in 1413 when Ruler Balša III issued a charter for the construction of the Church of St. Nicholas. The complex consists of two churches dedicated to St. Nicholas and the Holy Trinity, along with a museum housing one of Montenegro's most prestigious monastic treasuries. Within this treasury are exquisite handwritten Gospels, historical charters from Catherine the Great, and a golden chalice gifted by Tsar Paul I. For centuries, the monastery served as a vital educational center, and its library continues to safeguard rare volumes despite being plundered by Napoleonic troops in 1812. A distinctive feature of the site is 'Egor Stroganov’s Path,' a stone staircase leading to Čelobrdo village, which a Russian monk spent ten years building by hand as an act of penance. Today, Praskvica remains a place of reflection and an active monastic community, offering panoramic vistas over the Adriatic coast.
