Lower Ostrog Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Lower Ostrog Monastery was built in 1824 and is an integral part of the famous monastery complex dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog. While the Upper Monastery is spectacularly carved into the cliffside, the lower part is situated in a greener, more accessible location at an altitude of about 800 meters. The heart of the ensemble is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in a traditional style and housing significant frescoes. The monks' quarters and a guesthouse for the numerous pilgrims who travel from around the world each year are also located here. Historically, the lower monastery served as a shelter and logistical center for the hermit community living above. The path between the two parts of the monastery is an important part of the pilgrimage experience, leading through steep terrain. The lower monastery plays a central role in the liturgical life of the Metropolinate of Montenegro and the Littoral.
