Ostrog Monastery, founded in 1665 by Saint Basil, is a major Orthodox pilgrimage site in the Balkans. The Upper Monastery is built directly into a vertical rock face at an altitude of 900 meters above the Bjelopavlići plain. Visitors can view the founder's relics inside the fresco-decorated cave churches. The complex also includes the 19th-century Lower Monastery, from which a 3-kilometer forest path leads up the mountain. Access from Nikšić requires navigating a narrow mountain road with numerous hairpin turns.
