Župa Monastery (Montenegro)

Weather…

Župa Monastery, located approximately 12 kilometers from the city of Nikšić, is a vital spiritual center in central Montenegro dedicated to St. Luke, with origins dating back to the 13th century. According to historical accounts, the original monastery was founded by the granddaughter of the Serbian King Stefan Nemanja on the right bank of the Gračanica River. Due to its position along a significant strategic route, the monastery was leveled multiple times by Ottoman forces, most notably in 1852 and 1877 during the Montenegrin-Turkish wars. The present structure largely dates to 1881, when Prince Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš ordered its reconstruction, dedicating the monastery as a memorial for the region's fallen heroes. The church interior is adorned with a magnificent iconostasis and frescoes that radiate the spiritual depth of the Orthodox tradition. Today, the monastery is home to an active community of nuns who are widely recognized for their artistry in creating hand-embroidered liturgical vestments and icon painting. Visitors cherish Župa Monastery for its serene setting amidst verdant hills and its enduring role as a guardian of Montenegrin cultural identity.
