Husein-Pasha's Mosque Pljevlja (Montenegro)

Weather…

Husein-Pasha's Mosque in Pljevlja is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans. Commissioned in 1569 by Husein-Pasha Boljanić, a high-ranking Ottoman official born in the region, the mosque stands as a symbol of the town's historical importance. Its most striking feature is the 42-meter-high minaret, which is the tallest in the former Yugoslavia; it was restored to its current height after being damaged by lightning in 1911. The mosque follows a classical square plan, topped by a large central dome and a portico with three smaller domes. Inside, the walls are adorned with rich ornamental paintings, exquisite calligraphy, and a masterfully carved marble minbar and mihrab. One of the mosque's most prized possessions is a 16th-century handwritten Quran, considered a masterpiece of Islamic calligraphy. Today, the mosque remains an active place of worship and a protected cultural monument, reflecting the diverse religious heritage of Montenegro's Sandzak region.
