Best season
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) bring mild temperatures and lush vegetation, offering handy conditions for wildlife watching. The hot summer months are less suitable as most animals retreat to shaded areas to rest.
Best time of day
Early morning hours shortly after sunrise are best for spotting birds and mammals foraging for food. The dusk period just before sunset is also promising, as animals become more active again.
Etiquette
Always stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing fragile vegetation and wildlife. Do not feed any animals and keep a respectful distance - at least 50 meters from large mammals.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars (8× or 10× magnification) is essential for viewing animals safely from a distance. Sturdy hiking boots with a treaded sole are recommended, as trails in the gorge can be rocky and uneven.
Getting there
The reserve is reachable by car from Chișinău in about one hour; parking is near the Orheiul Vechi monastery complex. From there, a well‑marked footpath descends into the gorge.
What to expect
Wildlife here is shy and not always easily spotted - plan for at least two to three hours for a visit. Sit down in a quiet spot and wait patiently; animals often reappear after a while.
