Old Orhei (Moldova)

Weather…

The Orheiul Vechi archaeological reserve is one of Moldova's most significant historical sites, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Chișinău in a dramatic bend of the Răut River. The site contains traces of various civilizations, from the Paleolithic era and Dacian fortifications to the medieval Golden Horde city known as Shehr al-Jedid. Particularly impressive are the cave monasteries carved into limestone cliffs, which have been used by monks as retreats since the 15th century, with some still inhabited today. Visitors can explore the remains of a Tatar mosque, a public bathhouse, and a Moldovan fortress dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The combination of sweeping natural landscapes and millennia of settlement history makes the reserve a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. The village of Butuceni, part of the reserve, preserves traditional 19th-century Moldovan architecture. Annually, the site hosts major cultural events such as the 'DescOPERĂ' opera festival, which uniquely blends classical music with the historical ambiance.
