💡 Tips
- Bring cash (Euros, Dollars, or Moldovan Lei) to exchange into Transnistrian Rubles upon arrival; foreign credit cards do not work here at all.
- You cannot exchange Transnistrian Rubles anywhere outside the region, so make sure to spend them all or exchange them back before you leave.
- You must cross a border checkpoint to enter; keep the migration slip you are given extremely safe, as you will need to present it when leaving.
- Walk down the main October 25th Street for the city's highest concentration of Soviet-era architecture, Lenin statues, and historic monuments.
- While the city is generally very safe for tourists, strictly avoid taking photographs of military installations, checkpoints, or security buildings.

Tiraspol, located on the eastern bank of the Dniester River, is the largest city in Transnistria and serves as its de facto administrative center. The city was founded in 1792 by the Russian General Alexander Suvorov as a strategic fortress following the Treaty of Jassy to secure the Russian Empire's southwestern borders. Throughout the 19th century, Tiraspol evolved into a significant trade and industrial hub, aided by its connection to the railway network. From 1924 to 1940, it held the status of capital of the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Ukrainian SSR. Today, the city is notable for its preserved Soviet-era architecture, characterized by wide avenues and massive monuments like the Lenin statue in front of the Government House. Economically, it relies on heavy industry, textile manufacturing at Tirotex, and the production of world-renowned brandy at the KVINT distillery. The city remains a complex geopolitical and cultural focal point in the region.
