Bender Fortress (Tighina) (Moldova)

Weather…

Bender Fortress, also known as Tighina, is a massive medieval fortification situated on the right bank of the Dniester River. Originally constructed from wood by Moldavian princes in the 15th century, it was extensively rebuilt in stone by the Ottomans after Suleiman the Magnificent captured the area in 1538. The fortress design follows the Western European bastion system, featuring ten bastions and eleven gates to ensure maximum defense. It played a pivotal role during the Russo-Turkish Wars and famously hosted the Swedish King Charles XII after his defeat at the Battle of Poltava in 1709. The entire complex covers approximately 20 hectares and currently houses a museum dedicated to the military history of the Dniester region. Recent restoration efforts have preserved the structural integrity of the towers and walls, making it one of Moldova’s most significant historical landmarks. Its strategic location made it a vital control point for regional trade and military operations for centuries.
