Ștefan Vodă, formerly known as Suvorov, is the administrative capital of the Ștefan Vodă District in southeastern Moldova, situated near the Ukrainian border. The town was founded in 1864 as a German colony named Kizil, later renamed after the Russian General Suvorov, and eventually granted its current name in 1990 to honor the medieval ruler Stephen the Great. Geographically, the city lies within the southern Moldovan steppe, characterized by rich chernozem soils that have fostered one of the country's most premier wine-growing regions. The world-renowned Purcari winery is located in close proximity, playing a significant role in the local economy and regional identity.
