Vohipeno Arab Settlement (Madagascar)

Weather…

Vohipeno, located in southeastern Madagascar along the banks of the Matitanana River, is the cultural and spiritual heart of the Antemoro people, whose ancestors were Arab-Islamic settlers. The settlement dates back to the 15th century when Muslim migrants from the Gulf region or present-day Somalia arrived, blending their customs with local traditions. Vohipeno is world-renowned for preserving 'Sora-be', the Malagasy language written in Arabic script. The town is the seat of the 'katibo', traditional scribes who compose sacred manuscripts on handmade Antemoro paper, crafted from the bark of the avoha tree. Although the architecture of Vohipeno is largely modern today, the sacred layout of the village and the royal residences (Tranobe) follow ancient patterns influenced by Islamic heritage. Historically, Vohipeno was a premier center for astrology, traditional medicine, and political counsel for Malagasy monarchs. To this day, the site remains a living testament to the early intercultural exchanges between the Arab world and Madagascar.
