The city's structure is traditionally divided into three tiers: the scenic Upper Town (Haute-Ville) with its steep cobblestone streets and historic churches, the Middle Town for administration, and the bustling Lower Town (Basse-Ville). Fianarantsoa is widely celebrated as the heart of Madagascar's wine industry, with surrounding vineyards producing the island's most famous vintages. Furthermore, the city is a major educational center, home to numerous prestigious religious seminaries and the University of Fianarantsoa. A vital piece of local infrastructure is the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) railway, which connects the highlands to the coastal town of Manakara and acts as a lifeline for remote rainforest villages.
