Fianarantsoa, the cultural and intellectual capital of the Betsileo people, is perched in the southern highlands of Madagascar at an altitude of roughly 1,200 meters. Established in 1830 by Queen Ranavalona I, the city was designed to serve as an administrative hub and an architectural counterpart to Antananarivo. The city's structure is traditionally divided into three tiers: the scenic Upper Town (Haute-Ville) with its steep cobblestone streets and historic churches, the Middle Town for administration, and the bustling Lower Town (Basse-Ville). Fianarantsoa is widely celebrated as the heart of Madagascar's wine industry, with surrounding vineyards producing the island's most famous vintages. Furthermore, the city is a major educational center, home to numerous prestigious religious seminaries and the University of Fianarantsoa. A vital piece of local infrastructure is the Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) railway, which connects the highlands to the coastal town of Manakara and acts as a lifeline for remote rainforest villages. Due to its exceptional architectural heritage, the Old Upper Town was placed on the World Monuments Watch list in 2008 to promote its long-term preservation.
