Mananjary is a historic port city on the southeastern coast of Madagascar in the Vatovavy region, situated at the mouth of the eponymous river into the Indian Ocean. A unique feature of the city is the Canal des Pangalanes, which runs directly through the town, serving as a vital waterway for the transport of goods and people. Economically, Mananjary is a significant center for the export of vanilla, coffee, pepper, and cloves, which thrive in the hot and humid climate of the coastal plain. The town's architecture still shows traces of the French colonial era, although severe cyclones, such as Batsirai in 2022, have repeatedly caused massive damage to the cityscape and infrastructure. Culturally, the place is famous far beyond the region for the 'Sambatra' festival, a collective circumcision ceremony of the Antambahoaka people that occurs only every seven years and attracts thousands of participants. Despite the challenges posed by natural disasters, Mananjary remains an important regional hub and a site of great cultural significance for eastern Madagascar.
