Best season

The best season to visit Ranomafana National Park is the dry season from April to October, when trails are less muddy and lemurs are found in lower tree levels. During the rainy season from November to March, animals are harder to spot but the landscape is lush.

Best time of day

Early morning hours (6:00 to 9:00 am) are optimal as lemurs are most active foraging. Late afternoon from 3:00 pm also sees increased activity before dusk when animals return to their sleeping sites.

Etiquette

Maintain a minimum distance of 5 meters from animals and do not use flash photography to avoid blinding nocturnal lemurs. Do not feed the animals and leave no litter in the park.

What to bring

Hiking boots with good grip are essential as rainforest trails are often slippery and muddy. Bring a rain jacket, as sudden showers can occur even in the dry season, and plenty of water.

Getting there

Ranomafana National Park is located in southeastern Madagascar and is accessible via the RN 7 road from Antananarivo in about 6-7 hours driving time. The last section is gravel, and a four-wheel-drive is recommended, especially in the rainy season.
