Fianarantsoa Old Town (Madagascar)

Weather…

The upper town of Fianarantsoa, known as Antsenakely, was founded in 1830 by Queen Ranavalona I to serve as the administrative center for the southern part of the country. The architecture of the Old Town is unique, characterized by narrow paved streets and multi-story brick houses built in terraces along the hillside. Fianarantsoa is regarded as the spiritual and intellectual heart of Madagascar, shaped by numerous churches, convents, and educational institutions established by Christian missions. Due to its exceptional state of preservation and cultural significance, the Old Town has been listed on the World Monuments Fund's Watch list of endangered sites. Visitors can admire the traditional building techniques of the Betsileo people, skillfully adapted to the steep topography. Restoration of the historic buildings is currently supported by international projects to ensure this heritage is preserved for future generations. The district provides an authentic atmosphere, largely untouched by modern traffic.
