Žemaitija National Park (Lithuania)

Weather…

Established in 1991, Žemaitija National Park is located in the northwestern part of Lithuania, within the historic region of Samogitia. The heart of the park is the memorable Lake Plateliai, the largest and deepest lake in the region, which features seven scenic islands. The surrounding landscape, shaped by retreating glaciers, consists of rolling hills covered by dense coniferous and mixed forests, interspersed with extensive wetlands and bogs. These undisturbed habitats are a vital sanctuary for rare flora and fauna, serving as a nesting ground for the black stork, corncrake, and providing conditions for various wild orchid species to thrive. The park also holds a unique piece of Cold War history: hidden deep within the Plokštinė forest is a former top-secret Soviet nuclear missile base, which has now been converted into the Cold War Museum. The region is rich in local culture, characterized by intricately carved wooden crosses and wayside shrines.
