Žemaitija Highland (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Žemaitija Highland is a prominent, hilly landform that geographically dominates the western part of Lithuania. This extensive terminal moraine landscape was created approximately 15,000 years ago during the slow retreat of the massive Scandinavian ice sheet. It acts as one of the country's most crucial watersheds, from which rivers flow both eastward into the Nemunas River basin and directly westward towards the Baltic Sea. The absolute highest point in this region is the historically significant Medvėgalis Hill, standing at 234.6 meters above sea level. Unlike the sandy plains found in the south or east, the Žemaitija Highland features heavier clay soils and a diverse mixture of broadleaf and coniferous forests. The region is widely known for its scattered small peat bogs and remote, undisturbed valleys, reflecting the traditional landscape of Samogitia.
