Cold War Museum (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Cold War Museum stands as a unique and chilling testament to the severe nuclear threat that dominated the second half of the 20th century. It is located deep within the dense forests of Žemaitija National Park, inside the formerly top-secret Soviet Plokštinė missile base. Constructed in 1960, this was the Soviet Union's very first underground base for medium-range ballistic missiles (the R-12 Dvina). For over a decade, the nuclear warheads stationed here kept major Western European cities within constant striking distance. Today, visitors can descend into the 27-meter-deep silos and explore the labyrinthine command center, directly experiencing the claustrophobic conditions and the terrifying reality of the global nuclear arms race.
