Viešvilė Nature Reserve

Founded in 1991 in western Lithuania, the Viešvilė Nature Reserve protects the pristine floodplain of the Viešvilė River, a small tributary of the larger Nemunas. This reserve is one of the rare areas in the Baltic region where the river system and its intricate hydrological processes function completely undisturbed, free from human intervention. The small river freely meanders through ancient deciduous and mixed forests that retain a significant amount of deadwood, creating an absolute paradise for wood-boring insects and a multitude of fungi species. The cold, unpolluted waters of the Viešvilė provide convenient spawning conditions for the brown trout and serve as a prime hunting ground for the elusive Eurasian otter and the brilliantly colored common kingfisher. The elusive black stork, which demands undisturbed old-growth forests, also builds its massive nests in the tree canopy here. Dedicated to the preservation of natural forest-river dynamics, public access to the reserve is strictly controlled.
