Kretinga is one of the oldest towns in western Lithuania, located just a few kilometers from the Baltic Sea coast. First documented in 1253 as a Curonian castle site, the town's development was significantly shaped in the 17th century by the military commander Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius, who established a Franciscan monastery and the monumental Church of the Annunciation. A major architectural landmark is the Tiškevičius Family Estate, built in the 19th century, which now houses the Kretinga Museum. The estate's crown jewel is the 'Winter Garden,' a magnificent greenhouse filled with exotic tropical plants, which was one of the largest private conservatories in Europe during the late 19th century. Kretinga seamlessly blends religious heritage with aristocratic grandeur, serving as a vital regional hub near the port city of Klaipėda. The town is also noted for its historic watermills and a well-preserved urban core that reflects centuries of Lithuanian, German, and Russian cultural interactions.
