Rambynas Regional Park, located in the far west of Lithuania, protects one of the country's most culturally and ecologically significant landscapes along the lower reaches of the Nemunas River. The focal point and namesake of the park, established in 1992, is Rambynas Hill. In pre-Christian times, this was a profoundly sacred mountain for the Skalvians, a Baltic tribe, featuring sacrificial altars dedicated to Perkūnas, the god of thunder. Today, although historical river erosion has claimed parts of the hill, it still provides sweeping, panoramic views across the vast Nemunas floodplains and into the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Ecologically, the park is renowned for its intact floodplains and a network of Nemunas oxbow lakes. These damp, sprawling meadows are famous for supporting the highest density of nesting white storks in Lithuania, and possibly in Europe; it is common to find dozens of nests clustered in single villages. The oxbow lakes also provide pristine habitats for amphibians, fish, and the Eurasian beaver.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
