Tauragė Castle (Lithuania)

Weather…

Tauragė Castle is a fascinating architectural ensemble that, despite its highly fortified appearance, was never designed for chivalric battles. The buildings were erected in the mid-19th century in Neo-Romantic and Neo-Gothic styles by Russian Tsarist authorities to serve as a monumental customs house near the former Prussian border. With its four massive corner towers, crenellated walls, and imposing entrance area, it perfectly resembles a medieval fortress. During the First and Second World Wars, the complex was severely damaged multiple times and repurposed. Over the years, the building has served variously as a prison, a hospital, and a public school. Today, it stands as the cultural heartbeat of the region, housing the Tauragė Regional Museum along with a music school and modern exhibition spaces.
